This original Walsall flameproof well glass ceiling light is a mid-20th century British industrial lamp, manufactured in the West Midlands — a region long associated with heavy engineering and electrical production. The cast “WALSALL” maker’s mark confirms its origin as a genuine UK-made fixture, produced for use in demanding industrial environments where durability and safety were essential. Reclaimed from a former Ministry of Defence factory associated with WW2 production, this green enamel light would have originally illuminated spaces where hazardous materials and processes required robust, flameproof equipment. Fittings of this type were commonly installed across defence manufacturing sites, power infrastructure, and heavy industry, where reliability was critical and failure was not an option. The design reflects this purpose. A heavy cast aluminium body houses a sealed well glass enclosure, secured by a bolted flameproof gallery engineered to contain internal ignition.
