Mid Century Oval Extending Dining Table by VB Wilkins for G Plan
G Plan oval extending dining table in teak, showcasing the clean lines and sculptural organic forms that defined British mid century modern design during the 1960s. The table features elegant sled-style pedestal supports and a beautifully grained teak top with softly rounded edges, giving the piece a refined presence. This example retains its original extension functionality and has been thoughtfully restored. Due to irreparable damage to the original veneer on the extension leaves, the central panels were professionally refinished in a contrasting satin black lacquer and properly sealed. The result is a striking two-tone appearance that feels intentional and contemporary while still complementing the warmth of the original teak. The black center section creates a subtle visual break through the middle of the table, adding a modern graphic element that pairs particularly well with both Scandinavian and contemporary interiors. The finish has been professionally executed to a high standard with a smooth, durable surface suitable for everyday use. DIMENSIONS: 81" wide open / 63" wide closed x 42" deep x 29" high CONDITION: This fantastic dining table is in excellent restored vintage condition. It began as a pioneering range of furniture in the United Kingdom produced by E Gomme Ltd of High Wycombe. The success of G Plan led to E Gomme becoming one of the UK's largest furniture manufacturers. From 1943, during World War II, furniture sales were controlled by rationing. The ending of this scheme in December 1952, combined with the 1951 Festival of Britain, led to a pent-up demand for more modern furniture. In 1953, Donald Gomme, the designer at E Gomme, decided to produce a range of modern furniture for the entire house which could be bought piece-by-piece according to budgets. Designs were available for several years so people could collect them slowly. All furniture was marked with a distinctive brand mark. British furniture designer Victor Bramwell (V.B.) Wilkins is best known for his Fresco range for G-Plan. Although all of Wilkins known works were produced by G-Plan, there is little biographical information available on the designer. It can be assumed, however, that he worked as an in-house designer for the British manufacturer for many years. In the early 1960s, British furniture manufacturer G-Plan set the standard for modernist, mass-market furniture in postwar Britain.
