Leonid Ramirez – La Cortina de Hierro | Colombia
Stone fruit and tangerine up front, ripe fig through the middle, and a cacao nib finish that gives it real weight. Leonid Ramirez farms Finca La Cortina de Hierro — "the Iron Curtain" — in Quindío, in the heart of Colombia's coffee country, at 1,600 meters. He's a young producer who has spent recent harvests taking more of his processing into his own hands, and it shows in how clean and focused this cup is. The variety is Tabi, a Colombian cross of Typica and Bourbon with Timor Hybrid for disease resistance. In the cup it leans toward its classic parents: sweet, layered, structured. Washed, so the fruit stays defined. A Colombian with more depth than most — beautiful as a pour over, surprising as espresso.
