Black Cherry
Black Cherry Shrimp are a striking selectively bred variety of Neocaridina shrimp, featuring deep dark brown to rich black colouration. Their intense colour creates a beautiful contrast against green plants, moss, light-coloured substrate and natural aquascapes. Like other Neocaridina varieties, Black Cherry Shrimp are hardy, peaceful and relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced shrimp keepers. Once established in a mature, stable aquarium, they can breed readily and develop into a thriving colony. At AUShrimpHome, our Neocaridina shrimp are locally bred in Sydney tap water. From our experience maintaining hundreds of breeding tanks, we find that stable conditions are more important than constantly adjusting GH, KH, pH or TDS to chase a perfect number. Colour & Grading Black Cherry Shrimp can range from dark brown or charcoal through to an intense, almost solid black depending on genetics, age, sex and individual grade. Juvenile shrimp may initially appear lighter than the adults shown in our photos. Their colour generally develops and intensifies as they mature. Females are usually larger and often develop stronger, more solid colouration than males. Tank Setup Black Cherry Shrimp do best in a mature, fully cycled aquarium with stable water conditions. We recommend providing plenty of natural surfaces and hiding places such as: Moss and live plants Driftwood Rocks Shrimp caves Leaf litter Sponge filtration Hiding places are particularly useful for shrimplets, berried females and freshly moulted shrimp, which are more vulnerable and benefit from somewhere safe to retreat. Feeding Black Cherry Shrimp are omnivorous grazers and spend much of their day feeding on biofilm, algae, microorganisms and organic matter naturally present in a mature aquarium. At AUShrimpHome, we supplement natural grazing with a varied feeding rotation rather than feeding the same food every day. Different foods provide different sources of protein, plant matter, vitamins and minerals while helping maintain feeding interest. Avoid overfeeding, as excess food can reduce water quality and encourage pests such as planaria. Recommended Water Parameters Parameter Recommended Range Scientific name Neocaridina davidi Adult size Approx. 2.5–3 cm Temperature 20–26°C pH Approx. 6.5–8.0 GH 6–10 dGH KH 2–6 dKH Temperament Peaceful Difficulty Easy / Beginner Friendly Diet Omnivorous grazer These values are a general guide. Stable water is more important than constantly trying to achieve an exact number. Breeding Black Cherry Shrimp Once comfortable, Black Cherry Shrimp can reproduce readily without complicated breeding setups. Berried females carry their eggs underneath the abdomen until fully developed shrimplets are released. A mature aquarium with plenty of biofilm, moss and hiding places can significantly improve the environment available to young shrimp. If maintaining a strong Black Cherry line, we recommend keeping them separately from other Neocaridina colour varieties. Different Neocaridina colours can interbreed, and subsequent generations may gradually lose the consistent black colouration you are trying to maintain. Size & Colour When Delivered Our product photos show mature shrimp with developed colour. Shrimp supplied may be juveniles or sub-adults, so their colour and body coverage may not yet be as intense as fully grown adults. Shipping stress can also temporarily cause shrimp to appear paler or more transparent. Give them a few days to settle into their new aquarium before judging their final colour. If you're ever unhappy or concerned about the condition of your shrimp after arrival, please contact AUShrimpHome and we'll be happy to help.
