Working from different viewpoints around the city, I made a number of thumbnail sketches exploring the narrow streets and changing light of the early evening. While Barcelona 1 captures a more open, central view of the city in warmer and brighter light, this work explores a quieter, more atmospheric moment. The scene is dominated by deep blues, reflecting the transition into the early Mediterranean evening, with the remaining light creating a striking contrast across the buildings and street. The contrast between the cool blue surroundings and the remaining warm light gives the painting a sense of stillness and captures the fleeting character of Barcelona at this time of day.
