The Masonic Tyler Sword The Tyler is the Masonic Lodge officer traditionally responsible for guarding the Lodge from outside the door. The United Grand Lodge of England describes the Tyler as the officer responsible for guarding the Lodge from the outside. Historical Masonic sources record that by 1738, at least in English Lodge jurisdictions, the Tyler was armed with a sword instead of the earlier trowel. Early Tyler swords were often described as curved or wavy, representing the appearance of fire. This became associated with the traditional Flaming Sword of the Tyler.
