I had no interest in drawing Sparky as a pirate with a hook hand. It felt too easy, and I knew there had to be a better way into it so the idea just sat there. Then it finally hit me: Horine, the hook was already in the way Sparky did the job. He made the call to the bullpen. That gave me the whole picture. Sparky on the phone, totally calm, while the phone cord itself comes to life, snakes across the page, wraps around the pitcher and literally yanks him out of the game. Once I saw that in my head, I knew I had it. Sometimes an idea takes five minutes to strike but this one took a few years to finally tell me what it wanted to be.
