PHILLIPS Artist-Signed Limited Edition Lithograph — Number 929/1000 — Published 1986 — Original Certificate of Authenticity — Framed Description Confrontation at Beachy Head is a dramatic aviation artwork by renowned American artist William S. Phillips, depicting an aerial encounter between a Royal Air Force Supermarine Spitfire and a German Messerschmitt Bf 109E during the Battle of Britain. High above England's southeastern coastline, a Spitfire of No. 92 Squadron RAF confronts an approaching Luftwaffe fighter over the famous chalk cliffs of Beachy Head. The aircraft bank sharply through the atmospheric coastal sky, while the landscape below conveys the height, speed and danger of aerial combat. Phillips captures a fleeting moment in which the outcome remains uncertain, inviting the viewer to imagine the decisions facing both pilots. His distinctive use of perspective, subtle colour and atmospheric light gives the composition a powerful sense of movement and historical realism. Historical Context — The Battle of Britain Between July and October 1940, the Royal Air Force defended Britain against a sustained German aerial offensive. The Supermarine Spitfire became one of the most recognisable aircraft of this campaign, serving alongside the Hawker Hurricane in the defence of British airspace. Its principal adversaries included the Messerschmitt Bf 109E, the Luftwaffe's leading single-engine fighter at the time. The chalk cliffs along England's southeastern coast provided a dramatic backdrop to numerous wartime aerial encounters. No. 92 Squadron RAF operated Spitfires during the Battle of Britain and played an important role in defending southern England. Confrontation at Beachy Head commemorates the skill and courage of the fighter pilots who fought during this decisive period of the Second World War. About the Artist — William S.
