A wonderful late Victorian English Britannia pub table bearing the name Richard Cross, Bar Fitter, Blackburn, England. Richly detailed cast iron features figures of Britannia, the female personification of Britain, with shields bearing the Union Jack. Elaborate floral scrollwork, lion masks and beautifully formed paw feet complete the ornate three-legged base. Remnants of aged gilding remain throughout, creating a rich patina that speaks to the table's history. The circular wooden top incorporates an unusual mechanical service bell, operated by turning the central brass knob. Mounted beneath the tabletop, the bell appears to be an original or early installation, a charming reminder of an era when customers could summon service at their table. A pierced circular stretcher connects the three legs and bears the Richard Cross name and Blackburn identification. Britannia tables were a familiar feature of late Victorian British pubs and refreshment rooms, their decorative ironwork combining practical commercial furniture with symbols of British identity. With its compact proportions and extraordinary casting, this table would be equally at home in a traditional interior or paired with contemporary furnishings. A wonderful piece for a home bar, sitting room, restaurant or intimate dining space.
