Exploring Mughal Architecture at Bibi Ka Maqbara 2026
Back to wall Bibi Ka Maqbara is a grand historical monument associated with Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. During our visit to Aurangabad, Maharashtra, we learnt that this 17th-century Mughal tomb was built in memory of his wife, Dilras Banu Begum, who was also known by the title Rabia-ud-Daurani. We discovered that the monument is often called the “Taj of the Deccan” or Dakhani Taj because of its striking resemblance to the Taj Mahal in Agra. It is traditionally associated with Prince Azam Shah, the son of Aurangzeb and Dilras Banu Begum. Designed by architect Ata-ullah, whose father, Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, is associated with the design of the Taj Mahal, and constructed under the supervision of engineer Hanspat Rai, the monument reflects Mughal architectural traditions. We also learnt that Dilras Banu Begum belonged to a noble family of Iranian Safavid descent. She was the daughter of Mirza Badi-uz-Zaman Safavi and married Aurangzeb in Agra. While exploring the monument, we observed its four tall minarets standing at the corners of a raised platform. We were amazed to learn that the dome and lower structure were built using marble, while other sections were covered with plaster to resemble marble. The monument also features beautiful floral carvings, marble screens, and a traditional Charbagh garden divided into four sections. Our visit helped us understand that historical monuments like these play a crucial role in promoting tourism in our country. We realised that preserving such sites is important for protecting India’s architectural heritage. As the younger generation, we should also take responsibility for ensuring that these cultural treasures survive for future generations.
