RETNA (Marquis Lewis, b. 1979) Say My Name, So You Can See Me Lithograph with hand-applied diamond dust | 2017 The title is wordplay on the artist's own name. RETNA has explained that he took the "I" out of the correct spelling, retina, and this print puts it back: the third eye, the "I" in our eye. Dense, angular script in bold black sits on a light cream ground, finished by hand with diamond dust so the lettering catches the light as you move past it. The lithograph was published in 2017 by Print Them All, the Paris print publisher, printed on a Marinoni press and hand-cut. RETNA (Marquis Lewis) is a self-taught artist from Los Angeles whose constructed script fuses Egyptian hieroglyphs, Arabic and Hebrew calligraphy, Gothic blackletter and graffiti. He has exhibited at MOCA Los Angeles and created the cover artwork for Justin Bieber's 2015 album Purpose. Available through Creed Gallery, Ascot, for collectors across Berkshire, Surrey and London.
