In 1989–90, Marseille won the French Division 1 title for the second year in a row, with Jean-Pierre Papin scoring 30 league goals. They also reached the semi-finals of both the Coupe de France and European Cup, losing to Racing Paris and Benfica respectively. In 1990–91, Marseille won a third consecutive league title and reached the finals of both the Coupe de France and European Cup.
