FORAGING BY THE COAST IN AUGUST Join us for a beautiful summer day exploring the wild coastline of Runswick Bay as we wander the coastal paths, shoreline and rocky foreshore in search of edible and medicinal coastal plants, seaweeds and shellfish. Summer is one of the most abundant times to forage by the sea. The coastline is alive with vibrant wild flavours, nutrient-rich seaweeds, salt-loving plants and fascinating marine life hiding amongst the rocks and tidal pools. Together, we’ll slow down and learn how to truly see this landscape through the eyes of a forager. WHERE Runswick Bay, North Yorkshire (full address given upon booking) WHEN Saturday 1st August 2026 11am-2am Around 3 hours. Note There is a parking charge. Parking may be difficult, please arrive early. Due to the natural terrain, this walk is not accessible. Guided by experienced coastal forager, Lucy, you’ll learn how to safely and sustainably identify a wide range of seasonal coastal edibles while discovering the folklore, ecology, nutrition and traditional uses connected to them. As we explore the bay, we’ll discuss: Edible and medicinal coastal plants Identifying seasonal seaweeds safely Sustainable shellfish gathering Tides, safety and responsible foraging Wild food nutrition and ancestral uses How to prepare and cook your finds at home On top of this, all attendees will receive a FREE copy of the ‘Wild Roots’ Good Guide to Foraging’ ebook. Runswick Bay is one of the most breathtaking stretches of the Yorkshire coastline, with dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, rocky pools and sweeping sea views that make it the perfect setting for reconnecting with nature and discovering the incredible abundance growing all around us. Whether you’re completely new to foraging or already have some experience, this relaxed and immersive day is designed to leave you feeling inspired, nourished and more deeply connected to the natural world. Expect sea air, salty hands, fascinating conversation and plenty of moments that will completely change the way you look at the coast forever. What’s Included A guided coastal foraging walk around Runswick Bay Expert tuition on edible coastal plants, seaweeds and shellfish Seasonal wild food tasters Discussions around safety, sustainability and identification A chance to ask questions and build confidence in coastal foraging Important Information Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear with good grip, as the foreshore can be uneven and slippery in places. We also recommend bringing waterproofs, drinking water and anything else you may need to stay comfortable outdoors for the duration of the walk. Full meeting details and what to bring will be sent after booking. Spaces are intentionally limited to keep the experience personal and immersive. PLEASE NOTE We do not cancel events for rain. If rain is forecast, please come well prepared with the correct footwear (wellies/beach shoes) and waterproof clothing. Please bring a pair of scissors and a basket if you have one! There are toilets available nearby. Well behaved dogs are welcome but bear in mind there will be food served on this event also and no one wants to harvest seaweed with dog wee on it. Dogs on leads are best. We strongly encourage car sharing/public transport/walking/cycling and to arrive early. We cannot cater for fish allergies on this course. We are unable to cater for dietary needs without plenty of notice, as the dishes are planned and food sourced in advance of the event.
