The Art and Science of Colour Creation with Zakami Yarns
Date: Sunday 12th July, 2026 Time: 1:00pm - 2:00pm BST (GMT+1) This event will be hosted on Zoom. You will be emailed a link 30 minutes before the start. Zakami Yarns is a small-batch hand-dyed yarn studio based in Edinburgh. Founded during lockdown, the studio has grown from a handful of experimental skeins dyed in a home kitchen to a yarn business supplying makers and a small number of independent yarn shops around the world. In this conversation with Melinda and Gergely, you'll get a glimpse into how their beautiful colourways come to life. From inspiration found in nature, music, stories, and everyday moments to the practical realities of working with dye, the discussion will explore both the creative and technical sides of the process. Along the way, we'll look at the unpredictable nature of dyeing, how colour behaves on yarn, and why no two skeins are ever quite the same. Whether you're interested in colour, fibre, or simply curious about what happens behind the scenes in a dye studio, there will be plenty to discover! This is one of many events being planned for our Virtual Mill Open Weekend celebrations. See everything we're planning for this year's Virtual MOW. Thanks for joining in with our annual bash! - The Mill Folk x Speaker Bio: Melinda and Gergely are the founders of Zakami Yarns, a small-batch hand-dyed yarn studio based in Edinburgh. Inspired by nature, stories, music, and everyday moments, they create colourways that range from subtle tonals to vibrant speckles. What began as a lockdown experiment has grown into a small yarn studio, supplying makers and independent yarn shops around the world.
