The Abstract Tiger

When I was only ten years old, my sister encouraged me to enter an art contest that was being promoted by a popular music radio station. They called themselves "The Tiger," and they were having an art competition to promote their station. What I entered was a colored pencil drawing of a tiger, which was made with unconnected lines and stripes of color, and my parents suggested we name the piece "The Abstract Tiger." This abstraction ended up winning one of the top awards in the competition. About forty years later, I found myself in India visiting a wildlife-rich nature preserve, where I was hoping to meet a tiger. From that perspective, the trip wasn't very rewarding. However, late one afternoon, as it was getting darker, I was sitting in a Jeep watching the daylight dwindle along a narrow dirt track – when all of a sudden a rustling in the bush was heard, and those elusive stripes came strolling by, being visible for less than a minute. Naturally, I grabbed a small camera and panned a fast capture of the majestic creature, and as I did, it turned its head and glanced back at me without even breaking its stride. I've had "The Abstract Tiger" in my personal collection for decades. Now, I've decided to share it, as a remembrance of that childhood art event, yes, but also sensing that, to some, it might prove to be a treasure in its own right, because its real, its abstract, and its historic. In fact, the name if this piece will be the same as that childhood pencil drawing – "The Abstract Tiger" – because that is exactly what it is.
