Cardcrete Relief Wall Sculpture Artwork About 'Lazarius' Lazarius is a contemporary figurative portrait made entirely from recycled cardboard. The work begins with a hand-built cardboard armature, which forms both the flat surface and the three-dimensional raised outer frame. This structure is then coated in my Cardcrete medium, a material made with 100% recycled cardboard made from scratch, creating a solid, textural base that has the feel of sculpted or built material rather than canvas. Drawing on both contemporary and classical references, this work was prompted by a recent exploration of interior colour pairings of russet oranges, deep ocean blues, and fresh mint greens. These earthy yet fresh combinations were reimagined through a classical, Roman-inspired portrait, with Lazurius taking its name from the Lapis Lazuli stones embedded in the frame. - Penny Brooshooft, Artist. 600mm x 705mm, recycled cardboard sheeting, cardcrete, plasters, acrylic.
