ROLLER SKATE DIYs is a 30 page A5 zine written and published by London ramp skater Jess Holland. It features stories of roller skaters building DIYs from concrete and wood in spots across Europe and Central America, as well as essays, photos and artwork, In scraps of wildnerness and neglected urban corners, DIY skate spots turn private space into collectively run spaces for joy and creaticivity - but they tend to be extremely male deominated, a reflection of the BMX and skateboarding subcultures that spawned them. Are there any DIYs that come from our own roller skating community, and if so, are they created differently, given that our subculture has been spearheaded in the 21st century by women, trans and queer skaters? This was the question that led Jess to travel to a Mexican hillside, rural Finland, a farm in Tenerife and a Berlin DIY to gather stories and document her own travels. The result is an inspiring collection that shows how bravery, tenacity, hard work and supportive sisterhood can turn a dream into concrete reality.
