Background A 150 years in materials development. 7 years of product testing. In 2019, we made the first prototype with this material: a Fold Top combining leather with 18 oz dry-waxed Field Twill cotton from British Millerain specially made for bags and luggage. British Millerain is based in Greater Manchester. A city that was once known as Cottonopolois, the undisputed global center of cotton manufacturing. With ships sailing in and out of the port of Manchester bringing in raw materials and shipping out a third of the global supply of finished cotton fabrics, the city was intimately connected to maritime needs through trade. The British Millerain twills were developed with the traditional sailcloths in mind, where waxes were used to make natural fabrics more resistant to weather. After seven years of our own testing, we decided to take it into production as we deemed it tough enough to stand next to leather. The 18 oz Field Twill is a cotton fabric similar to canvas, with a dense and tough diagonal weave. It gives the backpack a lighter body, while keeping the utilitarian character Kasperi is known for. Cut and sewn at our workshop in Hämeenlinna, Finland. Familiar, but not quite like anything we have made before. Use & Care How should I care for the fabric parts? The folding part is made from dry-waxed cotton, which is shower-proof and made for everyday weather. For all practical needs and field use it can handle changing conditions, rain, and daily use. The fabric will soften, mark and develop character over time. This is part of how cotton twill ages. For maintenance brush of dust and sand, and for stains wipe with a damp cloth. The body fabric has a dry wax finish that makes it resist water. Dry wax finishes can be reproofed with special reproofing agents. If you decide to use other waxes, it can result in changing the colour and feel of the fabric, which should be taken into account. How should I care for the leather parts? The leather works well in changing everyday weather, and getting wet is fine as long as it is properly cared for. Let the bag dry naturally at room temperature. Do not dry it with direct heat. Treat the leather lightly with wax every 4–6 months, or when the leather feels dry. Wipe the leather clean, spread a thin layer of wax with a cloth, let it absorb overnight and polish off the remainder with a cotton or wool cloth. We recommend natural products such as beeswax-based leather care or natural oils. Synthetic leather protection can block the pores of the leather. This can reduce the leather’s ability to absorb wax and oils, ultimately reducing the lifespan of the backpack. How long is the break-in period? The Field Twill is a structured fabric similar to tough cotton canvas. It will maintain much of that character, slightly softening over time. The leather back frame and shoulder straps still have a break-in period. It will take a couple of weeks of active use for the shoulder straps to start forming to your body. If you experience any pressure points, squeeze the straps lightly with your hands at the pressure points to help them form faster. Closing and opening the G-buckles is also stiff at first. As the leather loops soften and form over time, it will become fluid. With proper care and use, the backpack develops its own character. The leather patinates, and the dry-waxed cotton softens and records use. What about repairs or service? We believe in the right to repair. Every aspect, from structure to material thickness, is considered with repairability in mind. The hardest-wearing parts, such as the shoulder straps and back frame, are made from strong vegetable-tanned leather. The whole structure is designed so that servicing is possible. Because our bags are designed to last for decades, they may require servicing at some point. We offer a repair service for our bags and backpacks.
