Old Wedgwood Jasperware Blue Colored Covered Biscuit Barrel Silverplate Trim+Lid
Description: A beautiful antique blue Wedgwood lidded biscuit barrel having hoop handle. The barrel has a round footed silverplate edge at the base with ball feet attached to the base of the piece, which is round and flat with an edge. The barrel has straight rising sides supporting an attached metal ring (also silverplate) along the top rim. The metal ring is fitted with a hoop handle having raised decoration. The top ring also has a ledge where a flat round silverplate lid having a central finial would rest. We believe the metal rings on the top and bottom, the handle, and the lid are all silverplated metal and they are tarnished. The bottom ring is marked JD & S EP followed by an unidentifiable shape (see the 12th photo). EP of course is for Electro Plate and hence our assertion that the metal is silverplated. The exterior of the barrel is decorated with raised white Neoclassical relief decoration. The decorations depict gods, angels, people, small animals, and plants. The silverplate round lid has the numbers 13706 and 27 in two lines near the edge (see the last photo). The lid has a central finial, and the lid sits securely on the ledge of the silverplate ring affixed to the rim of the piece. The piece is colored in a nice dark blue coloration with the base being white, round, and marked WEDGWOOD impressed into it. The base has the markings "WEDGWOOD" and two additional characters; one is a W and the other maybe an E or a star within a square. This is a nice old and highly decorative Jasperware biscuit barrel or cookie jar with a nice color and a beautiful decorative motif on the sides. It would make a nice addition to any collection or as a great gift for the avid collector of Wedgwood. Please carefully view photos as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: Uncertain but the markings suggest the piece was made in the late 1700s to the mid 1800s. Origin: England. Size: The pieces measure ~5 3/8" in diameter at the base and the top and is ~7 1/2" high to the top of the finial. The jar weighs about 2 pounds and 10.5 ounces. Maker: Wedgwood. Marks: Stamped on the bottom of the base with the markings "WEDGWOOD" and two additional characters, one is a W and the other maybe an E or a star within a square. In addition, the back of the lid is marked with the numbers 13706 and 27 in two lines near the edge (see the last photo). Finally, the metal ring on the bottom, which has the ball feet, is marked JD & S EP followed by an unidentifiable shape (see the 12th photo). EP of course is for Electro Plate and hence our assertion that the metal is silverplated. See photos for additional details. Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice old piece of blue Wedgwood in good condition having beautiful and vivid colors, which would make a great addition to your Wedgwood pottery collection. Condition: The biscuit barrel or cookie jar is in very good condition with no breaks, hairlines, chips, or repairs. The metal lid and the metal rings on top and bottom as well as the handle are all in very good condition with minimum scratches but no objectionable dings. They appear to be silver-plated and are tarnished. They would probably benefit from a good polishing to bring them to their original beauty. The piece is lightly soiled and has some embedded soil within the raised decoration. The inside of the barrel is glazed and the bottom on the inside has bumps and pops which are original to the making. Be that as it may, this is a very nice old piece worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos to appreciate the beauty of the barrel and for additional condition information.
