The Western Jackdaw is a small species of crow that are found throughout the UK, Europe, Asia and Northern Africa. While no longer officially regarded as a part of the Corvid family, these clever and curious birds exhibit a lot of the same behaviors and a similar appearance to Corvidae. This particular subspecies bear the closest resemblance to crows with black plumage all throughout their body, while other subspecies of Jackdaw feature lighter grey or white plumage around the back of their neck. The name Monedula which was given to Western genus of Jackdaw comes from the Latin word for "money" due to their affinity for coins and other shiny objects, while the name for the subspecies Spermologus is derived from Greek and refers to them as pickers of seeds.
