L7, Seattle, 1989
Print Details About this photograph L7’s name comes from the 1950s slang term “L7,” meaning a square, someone perceived as conventional or uncool. The band adopted it as a visual pun: forming an “L” with one hand and a “7” with the other creates the outline of a square. Far from square, L7 built a reputation on abrasive sound, confrontational performances, and unapologetic political protest, often using the stage as a platform for direct, provocative gestures.
