Portrait Mourning Mask

This Mourning mask was hand-carved out of red cedar and painted with acrylic by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Spence Shaw. This mask features abalone in the eyes, copper tears and horsehair. Spence was compelled to create this piece. He has an emotional connection to the piece as it is inspired by the recent loss of many relatives. This mask measures approximately 8 inches or 20 centimetres high, 7 inches or 18 centimetres wide, and 4 inches or 10 centimers deep.
