Sunset – Tone Poem for Flutes and string bass
Sunset describes the end of a day at the office, or in the store, or perhaps the construction site, when we go home tired but satisfied at having finished our work commitments. The day is not yet over. There may be trips to the market or maybe delivering the kids to evening activities. This time is described by the first theme. Eventually, we happily settle down and pause to live through the almost magical end of the day, the setting of the sun. This can be heard in the second theme with its dreamy notes and calming harmonies. Nine flute voices sing the tone poem, but two low flutes provide the sunset at the end. Let your own life experiences with sunsets guide you throughout this piece. Let the inner voices of the harmony sing along with the melody lines, bringing the ending diminuendo notes to a peaceful silence.
