Michael Martino Korean Karatsu tea bowl
A Kuro-Karatsu chawan by Michael Martino, a ceramic artist based in Taku, Saga Prefecture. This bowl presents a richly layered landscape in which green, yellow, and reddish tones emerge and mingle within a dark glaze. Fine iron particles appear beneath the surface, lending a quiet depth that is at once subtle and mineral-like in its strength. Though somewhat refined in form, the rim retains a natural wavering softness, while the lower body preserves the rustic character of the clay. The clay body, blended with a slight amount of porcelain stone, produces highly distinctive kiln effects. The slightly elevated foot, reminiscent of Joseon ceramics, as well as the crepe-like texture within the foot ring, are also among the highlights of the piece. The scenery—where hints of green and red seep through the black—calls to mind a nebula suspended in dark space, or mineral strata revealed across the surface of a planet. It is a profound and quietly powerful chawan, holding a deep strength within its stillness. Diameter 13.3cm/Height 8.6cm With the original signed wooden box and matching cloth.
