Vintage Japanese Ceramic Tanuki Incense Burner
A vintage Japanese ceramic tanuki incense burner. Modelled in a charming rounded form with two small holes at the top of the head to release smoke from a mosquito coil or incense burned inside the hollow body. The surface is finished in a dark brown glaze with a large cream disc to the front and kanji detailing to the side. Tanuki (raccoon dogs) are a classical Japanese folkloric symbol, associated with good fortune, hospitality, and a touch of mischief, traditionally displayed at the entrance of homes and businesses as a welcoming omen.
