Goryeo Black Glazed Flat Jar with Dragon Handles
This is a black-glazed flat jar fired from the late Goryeo period to the early Joseon period. It is a Buncheong ware vase with a flattened body. This thin shape is characteristic of the Goryeo and Joseon periods of the Korean Peninsula. It has dragon-shaped handles on the shoulder and waist, but they are unusually positioned at an oblique angle. The circular part of the body has a faint unevenness, which may be due to carved patterns or accumulations of glaze. The entire vase is covered with a jet-black glaze and is called Black Goryeo. Where the glaze is thinner, it develops a brownish color in places, highlighting the shape of the vessel. The dark brown clay characteristic of Buncheong ware is visible at the bottom, and there are traces of small stones used to prevent adhesion to the kiln during firing. Among Buncheong ware flattened vases, this one is well-proportioned and possesses a dignified style. Although the surface is aged, It has a nice texture that makes you feel the passage of time. You may notice cracks in the soil inside the foot, but these are due to the properties of the soil and are formed when it dries during firing; they do not penetrate to the inside.
