Owned by a consortium of Quebec businessmen led by Marius Fortier and Paul Racine, the Nordiques quickly built a French-Canadian identity that resonated across the province. The franchise's defining moment came in 1976–77 when the Nordiques captured the Avco World Trophy as WHA champions, defeating the Winnipeg Jets in a seven-game final behind the scoring of Marc Tardif (a 154-point WHA MVP season), Réal Cloutier, and the goaltending of Richard Brodeur.
