Assorted Shallots and Potato Onion Bulbs Mix - 4 Varieties Allium cepa var. aggregatum - NOT to WA & TAS We put together this mixed bag so you can try a few different varieties without having to buy a large amount of any one type. It is a really easy way to see which ones you like best for your cooking. Here is what is included in your mix: 5 Red Shallots: These have a crisp, punchy flavour that works perfectly raw in salads or for quick pickling. 2 Golden Shallots: A great all-round staple with a sweet and mild taste. 2 Banana Shallots: These are longer and much easier to slice, and they cook down beautifully in the pan. 2 Potato Onions: A heritage variety that gives a rich, earthy flavour to your heavier, hearty dishes. Please note that, to keep things simple, all 11 bulbs are mixed together in a single bag, with no individual labels. If you need to know exactly which is which and want them packed separately, please purchase them directly from their individual listings in our store. This mix is perfect for building the flavour base of your next meal, and it pairs incredibly well with our softneck and hardneck garlic varieties. Growing and Care Guide These shallots and potato onions are incredibly rewarding to grow and share the exact same growing requirements. They act as a frost hardy perennial, though they are usually grown as an annual crop in the garden. When to Plant Sow your bulbs directly into the ground during autumn and winter in warm climates, or during winter and spring in cool climates. Cool: July, August, September Temperate: April, May, July, August Subtropical: April, May, June, July Tropical: March, April, May, June, July Arid: March, April, May How to Plant Prepare a garden bed in a position that receives full sun with well drained soil. Method: Sow direct Sowing Depth: 5cm deep Plant Spacing: 20cm apart Row Spacing: 20cm apart Expected Plant Height: 60cm Watering These varieties have shallow root systems. You will need to water them regularly to keep the soil lightly moist, but be very careful not to let the soil get waterlogged or the bulbs will rot. When the green leafy tops start to turn yellow and droop toward the ground, stop watering entirely. This helps the bulbs start the drying process before harvest. Fertilising Before planting, mix some well aged compost and a balanced organic solid fertiliser into your soil. When the weather starts to warm up in early spring, you can apply a light nitrogen based liquid feed to help boost the leaf growth, which eventually helps form bigger bulbs. Harvesting and Storage Carefully lift the bulbs from the soil once the tops have completely died back. You need to cure them before storage, so lay them out in a dry, well ventilated spot that is protected from direct sunlight for about two to three weeks. Once the outer skins are completely dry and papery, gently brush off the loose dirt. Store your harvest in a cool, dark, and dry place using a mesh bag or a wire rack for good airflow.
