Slab Building Workshop

Handbuilding | Structured & Sculptural Approaches This workshop focuses on developing a deeper understanding of slab-building techniques, moving beyond simple forms into more structured, intentional, and complex constructions. Working with rolled slabs of clay, you will explore how flat material can be transformed into three-dimensional objects through cutting, joining, and assembling. The emphasis is on precision, patience, and awareness of structure — learning how to control form rather than reacting to it. Rather than quick outcomes, this session encourages a slower approach to making, where attention is given to edges, seams, balance, and proportion. You will be guided through both technical and conceptual aspects of building with slabs, allowing you to create work that feels considered and resolved. What you will explore Preparing and rolling consistent clay slabs Understanding thickness, moisture, and timing Constructing clean, durable joins Building geometric and architectural forms Working with templates and planning compositions Refining surfaces, edges, and finishing details Approach This workshop balances technical instruction with personal exploration. You are encouraged to experiment with form while receiving guidance on how to improve structure and stability. Whether you choose to create a vessel, container, or sculptural object, the focus remains on clarity of form and quality of construction.
