Product Description These versatile cedar trays are handmade by craftsmen in Kanuma City, Tochigi Prefecture, which is an area highly prized for its famous Nikko cedar wood. They are carefully made with this high quality natural material, and designed with a minimal aesthetic – to appreciate the natural qualities of the wood. The bottom has four angled sides giving the tray a lightweight sense of it floating, and so it can be picked up with ease. Each tray is also hand stamped on the bottom and fully finished to lightly protect against scratching and moisture. Each piece is truly unique and will be reflected in the difference of wood grain. Japanese cedar (also known as Japanese red cedar or sugi) is a large evergreen tree that grows in mountains and areas of high rainfall in south and central Japan. It was extremely important in ancient Japanese society, both as a source of building material and for its spiritual aspects. Traditional Japanese culture places high value on natural items, and this attitude persists to the modern day. WDH works with Japanese craftsman with a focus on continuing traditional skills and high quality manufacturing of unique pieces made with natural materials that are hoped to be enjoyed throughout time.
