Kilim rugs are serviceable and practical, offering the advantage of being made from one of the most beautiful natural yarns, "wool", and are often completely reversible. Vegetable-dyed wool is a beautiful natural fibre that usually contains high levels of lanolin, making it very practical. Kelim is woven using hand-dyed yarn in both the warp and the weft. The patterns produced are often identified by the region where they are made, and the designs are passed down from mother to daughter through generations. The term we use to describe a flat-woven rug rather than a hand-knotted rug (pile) appears in two forms (to assist your search). Flat-woven rugs, handmade in Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and Turkey, are known as Kilims, whereas those made in other regions of the Orient are known as Kelims.
