Berber women weave these rugs in small villages, often inside their own homes on low looms, which is why most Azilals come in modest formats and why pieces of this length are less common than the standard 150 × 100 or 200 × 150 cm sizes. Unlike many other Moroccan Berber rugs that use a wool foundation, Azilals are almost always knotted on a cotton foundation — a structural detail that gives the rug a slightly firmer hand and more defined drawing.
