Thukeri and the Lesson of Greed
On Kukabrak (Ngarrindjeri) Country at Loveday Bay, just south of Raukkan. Two men caught many a fish at their favourite spot. One day, they caught so many that their canoe almost sank. A man appeared, watching them. He asked, ‘Can you spare any fish?’ The men, full of greed, lied to him, saying they had nothing, only enough to feed their family. The man walked off but turned to them and said – ‘You lie. You will no longer enjoy all that Thukeri you caught!’ The once juicy fish became filled with bone, and the men returned to camp, full of shame. The bony bream remains inedible to this day as a reminder and moral lesson of greed. Little did the two men know this strange man was Ngurunderi, the great ancestor of the Ngarrindjeri. I have painted the body of Loveday Bay in a pearl white, and the surrounds in a metallic grey, which keeps the eyes wanting more from the canvas. A great reminder to avoid greed and lies.
