Urnex Grindz Grinder Cleaner
Urnex Grindz Grinder Cleaner 430g — The first and best-selling grinder cleaner worldwide You empty your grinder's hopper, brushing the last beans out of the chamber. Then you open the Grindz can and pour 35 grams into the hopper — small, yellowish, coffee-bean-shaped tablets. You start the grinding process. The tablets are crushed, you hear a different grinding sound than with beans, shorter and denser. Yellow particles, looking like ground cracker powder, trickle out of the chute. You repeat with a few beans to flush – the first ones still come out yellowish, the second ones clean dark brown. Done. Burr and grinding chamber are free of coffee oils. That's Grindz. Developed in June 2005 by Urnex together with Mahlkönig in Hamburg — and at the time the world's first grinder cleaner ever. Pressed from grains, cereals, and pharmaceutical binders into coffee bean shapes. All-natural, food-safe, gluten-free (according to Urnex tests based on Codex Alimentarius standards), taste-neutral. One 430-gram can is enough for about 12 to 15 cleanings in a typical home espresso grinder. Made in the USA. We at Coffee Coaching Club are the exclusive Swiss importer for Urnex. What Grindz solves During grinding, tiny amounts of coffee oil adhere to the burrs and the inner wall of the grinding chamber. Over weeks and months, these oils turn rancid — and rancid oils mix with every new grinding process. The result: a musty aftertaste in freshly ground coffee, even if the bean itself is freshly roasted. Grindz works physically and chemically at the same time. During grinding, the tablets are crushed and penetrate the same crevices and grooves where coffee oils have settled. The porous cereals absorb oils like a dry sponge. At the same time, they act mechanically — gently scrubbing coffee residues from burr surfaces. What makes Grindz special No disassembly required Grindz works without needing to open the grinder. Hopper in, start grinding, done. Anyone with a grinder like a Varia VS6, Weber Workshops EG-1 or Option-O Lagom knows that disassembly is fiddly and re-calibration afterwards takes time. Grindz saves you that. All-natural and gluten-free Ingredients are grains, cereals and pharmaceutical binders — all food-safe. Urnex has explicitly tested and confirmed the gluten-free status according to the Codex Alimentarius standard (max. 200 ppm). For medical celiac disease, we recommend contacting the manufacturer directly as a precaution. Taste-neutral After rinsing with normal beans, there are no residual flavors in the ground coffee. The next espresso tastes like the next espresso — no cracker note, no repetition of cleaning taste. Developed with Mahlkönig Urnex tested Grindz during the development process together with the Mahlkönig technical team in Hamburg — for safety, effectiveness, and burr compatibility across various grinder types. Application Remove remaining beans from the hopper For espresso grinders: 1 capful (35–40 g) of Grindz into the hopper For large shop grinders: 2 capfuls (70–80 g) Set grind size to "medium" (middle position for filter coffee) Start grinder, let everything run through Wipe hopper, spout, and doser with a brush or cloth Flush with double the amount of coffee beans — until no yellowish powder appears in the chute Recalibrate grind size back to espresso setting (minor adjustment may be necessary) Recommended frequency: once a month for normal home use, once a week for professional volume. Urnex itself recommends one application per week in cafe operation — the recommendation scales with grinding volume. Important: When Grindz MUST NOT be used Not for automatic coffee machine grinders Grindz is not suitable for integrated grinders in automatic coffee machines. Automatic machines have a brewing chamber that brings the ground coffee directly into contact with water — and Grindz tends to swell with larger amounts of water. This can clog the brewing chamber. For automatic machines, there is a separate Urnex product: SuperGrindz, specially formulated for integrated grinders with a brewing chamber. When in doubt: for grinders in the CCC range, please check with the manufacturer or us beforehand. Grindz works with classic single-dose grinders like Varia VS3, Varia VS4, Varia VS6, or Weber EG-1. Anyone with a single-dose grinder like Varia VS4, Option-O Lagom, or a hand grinder from our Comandante Collection will benefit from monthly Grindz application. Taste improvement is immediately noticeable. Specialty cafes. Grinders like those from our Mahlkönig Collection with high grinding volumes accumulate correspondingly more oil. Weekly application is standard in professional settings. Multi-bean setups. Anyone who switches between different beans — for example, an espresso grinder for Cozy Chocolate and at the same time a fruity bean like Wild Peach — can "switch" between aroma profiles with Grindz without residues of the previous bean ending up in the second. Suitable companions For the espresso machine: Urnex Cafiza 566g (industry standard) or the plant-based alternative Urnex BioCaf 500g. For the milk system: Urnex BioCaf Alkaline Milk Cleaner 1L. Grinders from the CCC range in our Coffee Grinders Collection or for hand grinders in the Hand Grinders Collection. As the exclusive Swiss importer for Urnex, we are the Swiss point of contact for all grinder maintenance questions: office@coffeecoachingclub.ch. Frequently asked questions How does Grindz actually work? During grinding, the coffee bean-shaped tablets are crushed and enter the same crevices and grooves where coffee oils settle. The porous cereals absorb oils like a dry sponge and mechanically scrub residues from the burrs. Which grinders can I clean with Grindz? All classic espresso and filter grinders — single-dose, hopper grinders, hand grinders, professional cafe grinders. NOT suitable for automatic coffee machines with integrated grinders and brewing chambers. Is Grindz really gluten-free? Urnex has explicitly tested the finished product according to the Codex Alimentarius standard (max. 200 ppm gluten) and classified it as safe for gluten-sensitive individuals. For medical celiac disease, we recommend contacting the manufacturer directly before use. How often should I clean the grinder with Grindz? Home use with a few shots per day: once a month. Professional cafe volume: once a week. Do I need to recalibrate the grind size after use? A small adjustment may be necessary because grinding residues have been released and the burr gap has changed minimally. Rule of thumb: dial in the first 2-3 shots after Grindz application, then the grinder will be reproducible again. What is the difference to SuperGrindz? SuperGrindz is the variant for integrated automatic coffee machine grinders with a brewing chamber. The formula is designed so that it does not swell on contact with water. Classic grinders without a brewing chamber require standard Grindz. How long does a 430g can last? With monthly home use at 35–40 g per cleaning, it lasts about 12–15 applications, or a good year. With weekly cafe use, about 3–4 months. Can I see the product live before buying? Yes. Both showrooms have the entire Urnex range on site: Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and Zurich Oerlikon at Hagenholzstrasse 50b. Roastery Tip An unclean grinder is the number one aroma killer in a home setup. My suggestion from showroom practice: establish Grindz cleaning as a monthly ritual, for example at the beginning or end of the month. Five minutes of effort, and you'll have clean burrs for 30 days. Anyone who switches between different beans — for example, a week of Cozy Chocolate, then experiencing Wild Peach — should insert a Grindz cycle between beans. Old chocolate oils in a fruity bean are like sunglasses at sunset: you miss the colors. A clean grinder is a prerequisite for truly tasting the roastery's work. This is my view from the roastery, one of many.
