Vintage Rediffusion Radio Extension Speaker Control Box This is a Vintage Rediffusion Radio Extension Speaker Control Box, a piece of audio history from the mid-20th Century UK. It is in very good condition with a few surface blemishes; it hasn't been tested. Due to its small size and raised feet, it could be either stood on furniture or wall hung via the 2 holes on the rear of the case. Key Features:- Size (WHD): 15.5 x 10.9 x 8.7cm including the knobs/plugs The Logo: The prominent central stamped on badge bears the iconic Rediffusion company name. Channel Selector: The top black bakelite rotary knob lets the user alternate between Alarm, Off, and Ext. L/S (External Loudspeaker). Volume Knob: The bottom control adjusts the sound level A black bakelite Plug and Socket are located on the side of the box Cabinet: It features a durable grey casing with a textured metallic grille. Post WW2, the traditional radio / TV signals were so weak in some areas of the UK that Rediffusion devised a system using a wired / (cable) relay instead of receiving signals wirelessly via an antenna. A central station received the radio / TV broadcasts and distributed them directly into subscriber homes via overhead or underground cables. This speaker control box purportedly formed part of this system, although I can't find any evidence to corroborate this fact... Please click on the following link for more vintage technology.
