After you check out you will receive an email to schedule your class sessions. You must redeem sessions via that email to be signed up! This has been Cleo's favorite class to teach for so many years. Table loom weaving is intuitive, playful, and so fast. Knitting or crocheting a scarf could take up to 20 hours, but you can weave one with the same yarn in only 3! In this beginner workshop you'll learn how to warp your loom, weave with different colors, and tie off the ends of your first project. You have the option of buying a new loom to use during class, or renting one of our classroom looms for 1–2 weeks. Your first project will just be started in class, then you will take your loom home to finish it. Interested in learning how to weave tapestries, lace, or plaid patterns? Beginners are also welcome to sign up for our more comprehensive weaving course: Rigid Heddle Weaving Masterclass (coming soon)! BEGINNER PROJECT OPTIONS Students can make a scarf (recommended), table runner, napkins, placemats, or coasters for their first project. The warp (which is the longways yarn, and also the fringe color) will be only one color, but students may weave with as many weft (the horizontal yarn) colors as they'd like. RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCE You don't need any prior experience to take this class! Students must be at least 9 years old. LESSON PLAN Session 1 (2 hours): students will learn the direct warping method with one color, how to wind a shuttle, the basic weaving stitch pattern (plain weave), how to change colors, and how to hemstitch. Required homework before next session: weave as much as you can on your project and be ready to finish your project in your final class. Session 2 (1 hour, scheduled 1–14 days after first session): students will go over the hemstitch again and tie off the ends of their project, cut their project off the loom, cut/weave in any loose ends, and review blocking methods. SUGGESTED MATERIALS YARN - available for purchase at the shop We typically help students choose the best yarn for their project in their first class session! If you are bringing yarn from home, please wind it into a cake or ball before class! If you would like to bring yarn from home, we recommend bringing sport, DK, or worsted weight yarn. You'll need at least 140 yards of strong yarn (won't easily break when pulled) wound in a single ball with no knots for the warp, and 120 yards of any strength yarn for the weft (can be multiple smaller balls). LOOM & TOOLS - available for rent or purchase at the shop A 10–20" rigid heddle table loom with an 7 or 8 dent reed, 1–2 stick shuttles, 3 clamps, a warping peg, a threading hook, 2 rubber bands, a 10–15" roll of thick paper, 10 12" x 1" strips of fabric, scissors, and a darning needle. Each student can rent one of our classroom loom kits that come with all of the above tools, or bring or purchase their own loom and tools to use in class. Note: because this class involves us preparing a loom for you to use, even if it says there are seats still available for the session you are interested in attending, you must sign up for this workshop at least 24 hours in advance.
