Beginner Bags – Six-Week Travel Set Series Ready to level up your bag-making skills and make a full matching travel set? In this six-week beginner bag series, we’ll be making the Portside Travel Set by Grainline Studio, which includes a small zip pouch, a roomy dopp kit, and a weekend-size duffel bag. This class is perfect for very beginners or a great next step for students who have taken a beginner sewing class, made a simple tote, or feel comfortable using a sewing machine and are ready to learn more bag-making skills. You’ll build your skills week by week, starting with a small zipper pouch, moving into a structured dopp kit, and finishing with a full duffel bag you’ll be so proud to carry. By the end of the series, you’ll have a handmade travel set that is useful and totally customizable with your own fabric choices. *For this class you'll need to supply your own fabric but can purchase the hardware and other notions in our supply kit here. Skills You'll Learn: How to sew zipper pouches and bags How to install zippers in different types of bags How to sew lined bags How to sew boxed corners and structured bag shapes How to sew handles and straps How to work with heavier-weight fabrics and interfacing How to build confidence reading bag patterns and following multi-step construction Who It’s For Beginner sewists who know how to use a sewing machine and are ready to learn more. This class is perfect if you’ve taken a beginner class, made a simple tote bag, or have some basic sewing experience and want to build your skills with a fun, practical project series. You do not need previous zipper or bag-making experience — we’ll walk through each step together. Materials Provided: Sewing pattern, sewing machines, coordinating thread, fabric shears, pins/clips, marking tools, measuring tape, irons, and instructor guidance throughout the series. Needed: Your own fabric, lining fabric, interfacing. We’ll provide a list of the supplies during the first session. Suggested fabrics: canvas, cotton twill, denim, waxed canvas, sturdy cottons, or other medium- to heavyweight woven fabrics suitable for bags. Lighter cottons may be used for linings. Class Details Level: Beginner with basic sewing machine experience Max Class Size: 6 Duration: 6 sessions, 3 hours each Some homework may be given between sessions. Class Breakdown Week 1: Small Zipper Pouch We’ll start with the smallest project in the set and learn zipper basics of how to sew, learn to sew corners and insert a zipper. Week 2: Dopp Kit We’ll make the dopp kit and build on your zipper skills while learning how to create a more structured, dimensional bag. Week 3: Duffel Bag Prep + Cutting We’ll review supplies, cut and prep the duffel pieces, apply interfacing, and get organized for the larger bag construction. Week 4: Duffel Bag Body + Pockets We’ll begin assembling the duffel, including exterior details, pockets, and main bag panels. Week 5: Duffel Bag Handles, Straps + Structure We’ll work on handles, strap construction, bag shaping, and assembling the main sections of the duffel.
