Antique Handmade Terra Cotta Bricks Reclaimed from a Burgundy Wine Cellar Reclaimed from a historic wine cellar in Burgundy, France, these antique French terra cotta bricks are at least 120 years old and possess an extraordinary timeworn surface reminiscent of much earlier medieval floors. Size: Approximately 3¾" x 6¾" Thickness: Approximately 1" to 1¼" Material: Antique handmade French terra cotta Origin: Burgundy, France Age: 120+ years Condition: Reclaimed / antique Provenance: Historic French wine cellar Availability: In-stock reclaimed lot 156 SF Handmade in approximately 3¾" x 6¾" bricks and 1" to 1¼" thick, these pieces have the substantial proportions, softened edges and irregular surfaces characteristic of traditional French fired-clay flooring. Their remarkable color ranges from faded salmon and dusty rose to warm ochre, muted brick red, earthen brown, soft gray and near-charcoal. Burgundy has a long tradition of using locally produced fired clay for architectural floors, particularly in farmhouses, wine estates, cellars and other working buildings. Variations in the mineral composition of the clay, together with traditional kiln firing, produced the wonderfully inconsistent coloration seen across old French terra cotta. Differences in heat, flame and oxygen within the kiln could leave one brick warm red while another emerged buff, brown, gray or deeply smoke-toned. This reclaimed lot was removed from an old wine cellar in Burgundy, where generations of use and more than a century of age softened the surfaces and developed their remarkable patina. Worn edges, pits, firing marks, mineral deposits, surface abrasions and dramatic variations from brick to brick are not imperfections—they are the record of the material's handmade origins and long architectural history. The overall effect has an almost medieval character: earthy, deeply aged and beautifully irregular. Installed together, the varied colors create the kind of floor found in old French country houses and working wine properties—a surface with a depth and authenticity that cannot be convincingly reproduced with newly manufactured terra cotta. Recommended Sealer after Installation: Akemi Stone Impregnation for French Reclaimed Terra Cotta Tile Flooring Cleaning and Maintenance: Vacuum, then clean with Black Soap (Savon Noir) to disinfect, maintain, protect and enhance patina.
