Elite Designs Global Ltd Exceptional Grand 12ft Victorian Brazilian Mahogany Extending Dining Table – 19th Century A truly exceptional and increasingly rare genuine Victorian extending dining table, dating from the Victorian period (1837–1901) and constructed in magnificent Brazilian mahogany. Extending to just under 12ft (145 inches / 368cm), this is a substantial and impressive antique dining table of superb proportions, capable of comfortably seating up to 12 guests when fully extended. The magnificent mahogany top displays wonderful natural figuring, depth and movement throughout the timber. Its beautifully rounded corners and moulded edge are complemented by substantial turned and faceted legs, each terminating in traditional brass cup castors. Traditional Victorian Extending Mechanism This is a traditional Victorian pull-out extending dining table, constructed around a substantial timber telescopic extending frame. The table opens by pulling the two ends apart, allowing the wooden extending runners beneath the top to telescope outwards. The separate removable extension leaves are then fitted into the centre, progressively increasing the overall length of the table. Importantly, the table is also supplied with its additional central supporting leg, providing further support beneath the table when extended to its larger dimensions. Please note that this centre leg is not fitted or shown in the current photographs. This traditional system gives the table considerable versatility: the leaves can be removed when a smaller dining table is required and added when additional seating and surface area are needed. The extending mechanism itself is an important part of the table’s original period construction, demonstrating the ingenuity and quality of traditional Victorian cabinetmaking. When fully extended with its leaves fitted, the table reaches an imposing just under 12ft, making it equally suited to a magnificent private dining room, country residence, hotel, embassy or impressive boardroom setting. At its maximum length, the table creates a commanding centrepiece while retaining an elegant and comparatively restrained Victorian design. The richly figured Brazilian mahogany gives the top tremendous warmth and character, particularly under traditional French polish. Despite its considerable dimensions, the removable-leaf extending construction means the table does not permanently have to occupy its full 12ft footprint. Whether used for family dining, formal entertaining, Christmas gatherings, corporate meetings or distinguished hospitality, this is a table designed to make an impression. Restoration & Traditional French Polish The table has already undergone professional cabinet-making and restoration work and is now awaiting its final specialist French-polishing process by our experienced team. The table will be hand French polished using traditional techniques refined over generations, building the finish carefully to create the deep, rich lustre for which properly finished mahogany is renowned. Rather than concealing the timber beneath a modern sprayed coating, traditional French polishing brings out the remarkable natural figuring, colour and movement within the Brazilian mahogany. As a genuine antique rather than a newly manufactured reproduction, the table may retain light marks, knocks, variations and other signs of age and previous use. These are entirely consistent with a piece of this period and form part of its history, authenticity and individual character. We can also discuss bespoke finishing options with the purchaser, allowing the final colour and tone of the French polish to complement a particular interior or existing furniture.
