Antique Love Token Oscella Brooch 1900 British India One Rupee, 10.9g
We adore love tokens - the personal messages, the time and devotion to their nearest and dearest that meant they devoted hours and hours to create these personal devotional messages of love. Oscella is a super rare name - likely Italian - and gets its name from "Osella" meaning "little bird" or the Latin "Ocellus" meaning "little eye". We love that this could perhaps have been a code name their little name for their loved one from one of these translations. Oscella was also the name of the Italian town Domodossola but this name change was about 12BC so if wouldn’t be the motivation for this love token - but it may be a connection for a modern owner. Carved meticulously into a British Indian Rupee from 1900 - the florals are more European with the Ivy and Daisy - which would match with the origins of the word too.
