Antique Japanese Hand Carved Two Tier Side Table For Liberty and Co ( circa 1900 )
Antique Japanese Hand-Carved Two-Tier Side Table for Liberty & Co. (Circa 1900) An exceptional example of late Victorian / Edwardian Japonisme style furniture, originally commissioned by Liberty & Co. for their iconic London Regent Street store. This beautifully preserved accent piece features a rectangular top and lower tier gallery, both meticulously hand-carved in high relief with a fluid, sweeping pattern of overlapping irises and chrysanthemums. Crafted from a richly toned Japanese fruitwood, the table stands on four elegant, organic cabriole legs featuring subtle foliate accents that seamlessly blend Arts & Crafts aesthetics with Japanese craftsmanship. At the turn of the 20th century, Liberty & Co. capitalised on the Western craze for Eastern design. This specific range of furniture was hand-carved by regional Japanese craftsmen—often fishermen out of season—and imported flat-packed to Great Britain to maximise shipping efficiency. Once delivered to Liberty's "Eastern Bazaar," the components were assembled using matching hand-written numbers chiselled on the undersides to guarantee a precise fit. Contains the authentic stamps and serial number for Liberty. Nice antique condition with minor signs of patina and if sturdy construction. Height: 71cm Length: 64cm Width: 40cm
