Chicken Fence Panels A chicken run has two different jobs, and they need two different materials. Get that split right and you save money and lose fewer birds. The run perimeter — this is what we make The perimeter fence keeps birds in and keeps dogs, coyotes and foxes from walking through. It wants rigid welded panel, not floppy netting. Chicken wire is a containment material, not a predator barrier — a determined dog goes through it in seconds, and a raccoon simply pulls it apart. A welded steel panel in a 1" x 1" or 2" x 2" opening stops all of that and stays where you put it for decades. Bury or apron the bottom 12 inches outward to stop digging, and run the fence at least 5 to 6 ft if you have foxes or coyotes. The coop itself — this is NOT what we make The coop and any night enclosure need ½-inch hardware cloth, which we do not sell. Raccoons reach through anything larger, and weasels and rats pass through openings that look far too small. Do not use our panels for the coop walls or vents. Buy hardware cloth for that part; it is the correct material and it is cheap.
