Borosilicate glass was invented in 1893 by German glassmaker Otto Schott, who introduced the world to the strongest glassware ever made under the brand name Duran. In 1915, Corning Glass Works brought it to the U.S. market under the trade name Pyrex. Since then, borosilicate glass and Pyrex have been used interchangeably. Initially, all Pyrex glass products were made of 100% borosilicate glass so they were able to withstand extreme temperatures and lots of daily use, making it perfect for pet bowls, but today, not all Pyrex is made of borosilicate glass.
