Handcrafted by Jin Tanikawa in Tokoname, this teacup embodies the understated beauty of one of Japan's oldest ceramic traditions. Made from the artist's own iron-rich clay, the cup is shaped for everyday use while preserving the warmth, balance and tactile character that define handmade Tokoname ware. The surface is finished using the traditional Mogake (藻掛け) firing technique. Before entering the kiln, strands of natural seaweed are wrapped around the raw clay. During firing, the seaweed burns away, leaving behind flowing copper and amber markings that cannot be planned or repeated. Each teacup becomes a unique record of clay, flame and nature working together. Unglazed Tokoname clay has long been appreciated by Japanese tea enthusiasts for its high iron content, which is believed to soften the character of water and bring greater sweetness and clarity to green tea. Over years of use, the surface gradually develops a richer patina, becoming more beautiful through daily tea sessions.
