That is a rare thing. There’s a humanness to this film that truly hits me. I can feel for all these characters. Flaws, foibles, too much heart. Some people fighting cynicism and kind of winning, some people trying to embrace cynicism and kind of losing. It’s difficult not to love Burt Berger and his heart-felt songs. Burt shows a side of Los Angeles that is rarely seen in TV and movies. It’s the LA of people existing in a place they’ve been in for maybe longer than they can remember, barely getting by - Some blinded by desperation and some not really noticing as the world around them drastically changes. Having lived in this sprawl for almost 20 years now, all very relatable to me. Daniel Kenji Levin’s black and white photography and Joe Burke’s vision of LA inspired this music as much as the characters. When I first moved here, I used to go to a place called Columbo’s in Eagle Rock. It was a great place to drink. There was usually some form of jazz combo playing. The musicians (and bar patrons) seemed a bit beat up, kind of drunk and maybe a bit too old to be still be hitting it that hard. They played standards and some form of California jazz. Totally human and flawed music trying to sell you a sunny plot of land too far from the beach and probably better avoided. Music that poked around the edges of Chet Baker or Miles Davis. Striving to be breezy but lost in a sweet, clumsy haze. All of this fed into the score music for Burt. I hope you can feel this music and see this movie.
