Antique Marriage Chest with Roses in Powder Blue & Cream

A very good example of an early 19th-century Austrian folk-art painted pine marriage chest or coffer. The wonderfully appealing powder-blue ground is decorated to the front with cream-painted panels of delicate rose garlands, with further decorative painted panels to each side. It retains its original bun feet, while the top has developed a beautifully worn and aged surface from generations of use as a seat. The interior retains its original candle box and is exceptionally clean, while the chest itself remains very solid and robust throughout. A charming and highly decorative piece of Austrian folk furniture with a particularly attractive palette and wonderful time-worn character. Austria, c.1830.
