Luke Chiswell's Chateau Marmont series transforms the ordinary into the iconic. Each hand-pulled screenprint captures notes the artist wrote while staying at the legendary Los Angeles hotel, preserving them on its unmistakable letterhead. Chiswell's abstract script blurs the line between text and art, evoking the transient thoughts and layered history of the space. A further exploration of the gestural, text-driven language Chiswell first developed in All the Flowers but in Blue, the series carries that same interplay of mark-making and meaning into a new setting. The works are as much about the fleeting moment as the enduring mystique of the hotel itself.
