Lettuce ‘Buttercrunch’

Botanical Name: Lactuca sativa Lifecycle: Annual Heritage: USA, 1963 ‘Buttercrunch’ is a heirloom Lettuce with crisp, tender leaves and sweet, buttery flavour. Produces a delightful rosette growing head that is tender and mild, with green outer leaves and a buttery yellow centre. Renowned for its crisp texture and delicious leaves that don't become bitter. A great all rounder that's perfect for salads, sandwiches and wraps. Prolong its storage life by removing the heart, using your thumb to twist in out of the head. It has been a consistent performer for gardeners for over 50 years. It won the prestigious All-America Selections award for its heat tolerance and resistance to bolting when released in 1963. Perfect for eating as baby leaf from approx. 30 days, or harvesting whole at maturity from approx. 60 days. SOWING: Spring - Autumn Sow Direct, or Transplant Lettuce is best sown spring through autumn. Seeds can be sown in trays for transplanting, or directly in place approx. 20cm apart when soil temperatures are between 10°c – 25°c. 10°c - 25°c 5 - 12 days Transplant seedlings – or thin directly sown seeds – once plants have several true leaves to a final spacing of approx. 20cm – 30cm apart. You can eat or re-transplant any thinnings. It is suited for growing in pots or containers if garden space is limited. 20cm - 30cm 30 - 60 days Hardy TIPS: Lettuce is easy to grow, but is best grown quickly for the hearts to form and develop properly. To encourage rapid growth add generous amounts of finished compost and organic matter to your garden beds, and regularly give supplemental feedings (such as of seaweed tonic or compost tea). As lettuce has a relatively shallow root system keep well watered for best results, especially in dry conditions. Mulching well will help with moisture retention and encouraging it to crop quickly. Overcrowding can also cause a bitter taste in lettuce so make sure you have enough space between the lettuce to enable growth. If sowing close to winter, transplanting can work well for allowing plants to get underway without experiencing significant losses from bug attacks.
