They began play in the shadow of the construction of what would become the Astrodome and were managed in every one of their three seasons by Harry Craft. Despite a roster of promising young talent, the Colt 45's never finished above .500 in the major leagues and ranked last in attendance in two of their first three years. Both Colt Stadium and the Colt 45's name were retired when the Astrodome opened for the 1965 season — the franchise picking a new nickname inspired by its hometown's role in the space program. Notable Colt 45's included Joe Morgan, Jimmy Wynn, Turk Farrell, Rusty Staub, and Bob Aspromonte.
