Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone (Assisi, 3 October 1226), was an Italian religious man and poet. Deacon and founder of the order that later took his name (the Franciscan Order), he is venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion; proclaimed, together with Saint Catherine of Siena, the principal patron saint of Italy on 18 June 1939 by Pope Pius XII, his liturgical memorial is celebrated on 4 October throughout the Catholic Church (a feast day in Italy; a solemnity for the Franciscan family). Deeply ascetic, he was also known as "the Poor Man of Assisi" because of his choice to strip himself of all material possessions and lead a minimal life, in total harmony of spirit. In addition to his spiritual work, Francis, thanks to the Canticle of the Creatures, is recognized as one of the initiators of the Italian literary tradition. Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, elected Pope in the 2013 conclave, was the first in the history of the Church to take the pontifical name Francis in honor of the saint of Assisi. The city of Assisi, because of its illustrious citizen, has become a symbol of peace, especially after hosting the four major meetings between representatives of the major world religions, promoted by Pope John Paul II in 1986 and 2002, by Pope Benedict XVI in 2011, and by Pope Francis in 2016. Pope Gregory IX canonized him on 16 July 1228 with the papal bull Mira circa nos, only two years after his death.
